One word… Eels

Dave should be watching this…

I have been watching this show on Adult Swim for the last 7 or 8 months and always get a good chuckle.

The Ultimate Guide

Today, Amazon.com sent me an email suggesting that I should buy The Ultimate Guide to Being Scottish.  Now, I’m not sure that I need such a thing, but clearly somebody in the OOA does, and in that interest, I am passing along the link.  I hope it’s useful!

A truly Alvin film

I’ve been teased by knowing this film existed and has had a limited release in the US and Canada but I’m not aware that it’s been shown anywhere over here in the UK.  And if it has made it to the UK, it’s probably just down in London which would be much too far to go and would cost too much.  But it was a movie I knew I had to see.  I was even prepared to buy the US dvd and ship it here if needed.  But as it turns out, I didn’t need to do such a thing.  Alvin didn’t have to go to the movie, the movie came to Alvin.

So just what movie am I talking about?  Repo! The Genetic Opera

So what is it about… let me use theIMDB entry as it saves me typing:

In the year 2056 - the not so distant future - an epidemic of organ failures devastates the planet. Out of the tragedy, a savior emerges: GeneCo, a biotech company that offers organ transplants, for a price. Those who miss their payments are scheduled for repossession and hunted by villainous Repo Men. In a world where surgery addicts are hooked on painkilling drugs and murder is sanctioned by law, a sheltered young girl searches for the cure to her own rare disease as well as information about her family’s mysterious history. After being sucked into the haunting world of GeneCo, she is unable to turn back, as all of her questions will be answered at the wildly anticipated spectacular event: The Genetic Opera.

Now, if that alone wasn’t enough to tempt you, then let’s just look at some of the cast… Anthony Stewart Head (who doesn’t love Giles and know there is a darker side), Paul Sorvino, Sarah Brightman, Ogre and you know what even Paris Hilton is good.  Come on, with such a cast, how can you resist?

I wasn’t disappointed.  I did have some hesitations… would it be fun as I imagined?  Would the music be blah?  Would it all work and could it find it’s way into my heart just like Rocky Horror and Shock Treatment?  Uh, yup.  Yes it can and it has.  I loved it.  I want to watch it again.  I want to get the extended soundtrack.  There were some really good tracks in the film that were just catchy to me. Supposedly there’s actually 64 tracks in total but the extended edition has 38 I believe. You can hear some over on the website but I strongly recommend Zydrate Anatomy which you can see if you go check out the Media section for the film.

Will this be everyone’s cuppa?  Hell no and that is yet another endearing quality.  I can think of quite a few people who just won’t get the film or enjoy it.  And there are those I know will.  It’s a thoroughly enjoyable musical romp that kept me entertained.  I liked the visuals as well.  The sets and costumes all worked to create the near future world where flesh and body can truly be the display of one’s vanity and potential lack of sanity and yet it’s cool, everything is good, no one really fusses cause everyone is like that.

Should you see Repo!? Absolutely.  Should you buy it… well, suppose that depends on whether it’s your cuppa.

Literal Videos

Greg’s 80 synth post reminded me to post this..

But is it still art?

Some of these are very well done.  Some not so but still all fun to have a look at.
